English & Math Placement

Beginning August 1, 2019, Lake Tahoe Community College students will no longer need to take the English and math assessment test for placement into English and math classes due to AB705.

Please refer below for the multiple ways in which a student can receive English and math placement:

  • High School GPA

The State of California has passed a new law (AB705) which provides students access to complete transfer level courses in English and math in one year. High school GPA will be the primary factor in determining placement along with other multiple measures. When you attend your required meeting with a counselor for “GPS”, please bring a copy of your High School transcripts, college transcripts, or any other academic records including AP scores or SAT scores.  A counselor will help you determine an appropriate starting point.

  • Course from Another College

If a class has a prerequisite and that class has been completed at another college or university within the United States, students can submit the appropriate documentation through the Prerequisite Clearance form

ESL Placement

Students planning on taking English as a Second Language (ESL) classes will take LTCC’s ESL assessment to determine the most appropriate starting level. To make an appoint for the ESL Assessment or to ask any questions, please call Maxine Alper at (530) 541-4660 ext 439 or visit our One-Stop Office located at LTCC.
