Tahoe Basin Public Safety Training Complex

A Regional Investment in Safety, Training and Workforce Development

Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is building the Tahoe Basin’s first in-basin training facility for emergency responders in fire, forestry, emergency medical services, and wilderness education.

The Tahoe Basin Public Safety Training Complex will provide hands-on training for students and current professionals, helping meet the region’s growing demand for skilled emergency personnel and strengthening local workforce pathways.

Construction begins in Spring 2026. The facility is scheduled to open in 2027.

Built for the Tahoe Basin

This complex brings advanced training opportunities closer to home.

Today, similar facilities are located outside the Basin and often require travel over mountain passes or out of state. The Tahoe Basin Public Safety Training Complex will reduce those barriers and allow year-round, local training for students and partner agencies.

It will also serve as a central home for the LTCC Fire Academy, which continues to graduate cadets who go on to serve agencies across the region.

What the Facility Includes

The Public Safety Training Complex is designed for real-world scenarios across multiple disciplines. Features include:

  • Outdoor training tarmac for fire and rescue simulations
  • Multi-story training tower for vertical rescue and fire operations
  • Specialized water system that recycles water used during training
  • Secure storage building for fire engines, equipment, and gear
  • Dedicated training space for Fire Science, Fire, Forestry, Emergency Medical Services, and Wilderness Education

A future phase will add classroom space at the complex, bringing indoor instruction closer to hands-on training areas.

Supporting Local Careers and Regional Resilience

The Tahoe Basin Public Safety Training Complex expands access to careers in fire, forestry, and emergency services for Tahoe Basin residents. It supports good-paying local jobs while helping agencies recruit, train, and retain skilled professionals.

As wildfire risk and climate impacts increase, regional partners are working together to strengthen preparedness and response capacity. This facility plays a key role in that effort.

“The Public Safety Training Complex has been a vision for our community for more than a decade. By building this critical infrastructure, we can ensure future generations of safety personnel are well-trained. Providing a pipeline of qualified professionals to local and state agencies is critical in this era of living with wildfire. I’m excited that our promise to the community is about to become a reality. I’m also honored that LTCC has been selected to lead the California Community College system in enhancing fire and forestry programs as part of this Project,” said Jeff DeFranco, Superintendent/President of LTCC.

Powered by Partnerships

The Public Safety Training Complex is made possible through strong local, state, and federal partnerships.

Key funding includes:

  • $8.6 million from California Community Colleges Fire and Forestry Pathways funding
  • $6 million from LTCC’s 2014 voter-approved Measure F bond
  • Nearly $2 million in federal appropriations support specialized equipment and training infrastructure

Additional support comes from regional partners, including:

  • City of South Lake Tahoe
  • El Dorado County
  • CAL FIRE
  • Tahoe Fund
  • California Tahoe Conservancy
  • Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation
  • El Dorado Community Foundation

These partnerships reflect a shared commitment to forest health, public safety, and workforce development across the Tahoe Basin.

A Project Years in the Making

The Tahoe Basin Public Safety Training Complex is the final major project funded by Measure F, the college’s 2014 general obligation bond. That initial investment has helped expand campus infrastructure and support community-focused projects that serve the region.
