LTCC Soccer Welcomes Two Former Coyotes Back to Lead Programs

LTCC Soccer welcomes new head coaches Maddie Smith and Carlos D. Trujeque Leal

Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) is bringing two familiar faces back to lead its soccer programs.

Carlos D. Trujeque Leal and Maddie Smith have been named head coaches for men’s and women’s soccer, continuing a tradition of developing student-athletes who succeed on the field, in the classroom, and beyond LTCC.

Both started here.

A pathway that comes full circle

Smith played for LTCC in 2019 before continuing her career at the Division I level. After competing at programs including Florida State, she returned to Lake Tahoe and gained coaching experience at both the collegiate and LTCC levels.

Now, she steps into the role of head women’s soccer coach.

Her journey reflects what many student-athletes at LTCC are working toward: developing as players, succeeding academically, and transferring to four-year programs.

“This program shaped my path as a student-athlete,” Smith said. “I’m excited to return and build on that legacy while helping our players succeed on and off the field.”

Built in the Tahoe community

Trujeque Leal’s path is rooted just as deeply in LTCC.

A former Conference MVP, All-American, and one of the program’s top scorers, he continued his playing career before returning to South Lake Tahoe to coach and mentor local athletes.

His return reflects LTCC’s connection to the South Lake Tahoe community, with a focus on developing local players and creating pathways to the college level.

Through his work with South Tahoe Football Club and Lake Tahoe Fútbol Academy, he has helped develop players across the region while building connections between local soccer and the college game.

“This opportunity means a great deal to me as someone who takes pride in serving my hometown,” Trujeque Leal said. “I’m ready to give back and build something strong here.”

Building on a strong foundation

Both programs have a history of success and a reputation for preparing student-athletes for the next level.

That focus will continue.

“Maddie and Carlos understand what it means to be a student-athlete at LTCC,” said Superintendent/President Jeff DeFranco.

Former LTCC head coach and athletics director Chris DeLeon, who helped build the women’s soccer program, will serve as a mentor and resource for both programs.

What’s next

Both coaches are already getting to work, connecting with players and recruiting for the upcoming season.

For current and future Coyotes, the message is clear: the opportunity is here.

Start at LTCC. Compete. Grow. Move on.
