Lake Tahoe Community College Dedicates First-Ever On-Campus Student Housing

October 6, 2025

History was made at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) as the college officially dedicated its first-ever on-campus student housing facility. This milestone moment had been more than a decade in the making.

The new 100-bed residential community isn’t just a place to live; it’s a place to belong. Designed to support student success and well-being, the building features semi-suite units with both single- and double-occupancy options, shared lounges and study nooks, a community kitchen, and panoramic views of the Tahoe Basin that make “home” feel like inspiration.

“This is a vision that’s been more than ten years in the making,” said LTCC Superintendent/President Jeff DeFranco. “For the first time in our history, students can truly live where they learn. This facility was designed to foster belonging, collaboration, and opportunity — the foundation for student success.”

Funded entirely by $39.4 million in state support from California’s 2022–23 Budget Act, LTCC’s housing project represents a major step toward addressing the region’s affordable housing crisis. South Lake Tahoe faces one of the state’s most severe housing shortages, with vacancy rates often below 2% and rents climbing more than 35% since 2020. LTCC’s new residence offers intentionally affordable rent options for full-time California students, with priority given to those with the greatest financial need.

At the dedication event, attendees heard remarks from President DeFranco, LTCC trustee Kerry David, and current student resident Hudson Conners before touring the modern new space. The atmosphere was both celebratory and hopeful, a moment to recognize how far the college and community have come.

“This isn’t just a place to sleep,” said DeFranco. “It’s a space to thrive. From late-night study sessions to shared meals in the community kitchen, this new residence hall will create lifelong friendships and give students the stability they need to succeed.”

The project also makes LTCC the first California Community College to open a housing facility funded through the state’s 2022–23 affordable student housing initiative — the very first to cross the finish line.
