Meet the artists behind the group exhibition, "Off the Press: Tahoe/Reno Printmakers," at a free Artist Reception and talk on Thursday Jan. 17 from 5pm-7pm in LTCC's Haldan Art Gallery, located in the library building. All are welcome, and light refreshments will be served! There will also be a free artists' talk at 5:30pm.
Since we now live in a digital age where the reproduction of images is as fast as a computer printer, the time-honored tradition of fine art prints has been somewhat under-appreciated lately. Many people are not aware of the difference between a fine art print and a computer-generated print of a finished work of art. This new exhibition coming to the Haldan seeks to educate about the tradition and techniques of fine art printmaking.
The process of fine art printmaking is essentially this: the artist creates an image on a substrate, or plate, through various technical means. That plate is then covered with ink, which reveals the image. Paper is placed on the plate and run through a press, transferring the image onto the paper.
The impetus for this exhibition is to highlight artists in the Tahoe and Reno areas that are actively engaged in the production of fine art prints. In an attempt to make this a very inclusive exhibition, each of the 28 artists were invited to submit three prints. In some cases where the prints were very small, more than three are included. The artists were asked to submit unframed prints so that we can install this exhibition in the French ‘Salon Style,’ using earth magnets. This also helps to create a more intimate experience when viewing the prints as it removes the glass from between the artwork and the viewer.
In conjunction with this exhibition, LTCC's Art Department is offering a series of printmaking courses in Winter quarter where students can experiment with various techniques in the production of limited edition fine art prints.
