SPA 191BJ - Catholic Kings: The Lives and Times of Fernando and Isabel, presented by Dr. John Rosenberg (.25 units) (All Levels)
The year 1492 was an annus mirabilis (remarkable year): there was the final conquest of Muslim Spain by Christian armies, the tragic expulsion of the Jews, publication of the first Spanish grammar, the beginnings of secular theater, and, of course, that voyage by Columbus. The context for these memorable events was the court of Fernando of Aragon and Isabel of Castilla. In that court we find the seeds of discovery and of modern Spain. In this class we will study the history of the "Catholic Kings," the final years of the Reconquest, the beginnings of the Inquisition, and the art, literature, music and architecture of this iconic period. Dr. Rosenberg is back by popular demand with this NEW course. He is the Dean of the College of Humanities at Brigham Young University and is also a professor of Spanish at BYU. He holds awards for his outstanding teaching at BYU and Cornell University.
