"Tapped," a documentary comes to LTCC Feb. 25
Is access to clean drinking water a basic human right, or a commodity that should be bought and sold like any other article of commerce? Stephanie Soechtig's debut feature is an unflinching examination of the big business of bottled water.
From the producers of Who Killed the Electric Car and I.O.U.S.A., this timely documentary is a behind-the-scenes look into the unregulated and unseen world of an industry that aims to privatize and sell back the one resource that ought never to become a commodity: our water.
From the plastic production to the ocean in which so many of these bottles end up, this inspiring documentary trails the path of the bottled water industry and the communities which were the unwitting chips on the table. A powerful portrait of the lives affected by the bottled water industry, this revelatory film features those caught at the intersection of big business and the public's right to water.
The movie will show at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 25 in the Aspen Room. This event is presented by Tahoe Water Suppliers Association and is free and open to the public. For more information go to http://www.tappedthemovie.com.

H1N1 Flu updates and information
As of now, even though there are cases of H1N1 Swine Flu in South Lake Tahoe, the current conditions are not considered “severe” according to the CDC. They suggest all adults with the flu remain at home until 24 hours after they are free of fever. For children, the recommendation is for them to remain at home for at least seven days, regardless of how many days they are fever-free, and to remain at home longer than seven days if they still have flu symptoms.
If conditions become classified as “severe,” the CDC recommendations are for all adults and children who have the flu to remain at home for at least seven days, and then for at least 24 hours after they are completely flu symptom-free.
To help stop the spread of germs at LTCC, we will be providing tissues and disinfecting wipes for all the classrooms, and will be having our cleaning crew take extra steps to wipe down commonly-used surfaces with a disinfectant. We have also posted information about the flu around campus.
For more information on preventing the flu go to the LTCC Emergency Information page.

Orchid's restaurant to offer lunch options in the LTCC Student Center
Starting Monday, Orchid’s Authentic Thai Restaurant will be serving lunch options four days a week in the LTCC Student Center. Thanks to student initiative, led by Associated Student Council President Rachel Sa-Onoy, the restaurant agreed to offer service to the LTCC community for the winter quarter.
“This is really part of a student effort to reenergize the Student Center,” said Guy Lease, interim vice president of business services. “The contract is just for the winter quarter right now as we try to gauge how responsive people will be.”
The restaurant plans to offer lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. As the quarter progresses, LTCC’s culinary arts students might take over Wednesday’s lunch time slot to offer more variety. Orchid’s lunches will operate on a cash only basis for now.
Barnes & Noble will also continue to operate the coffee cart at its present location in the Student Center. The coffee cart is open 7:45 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Former LTCC student compiles children's messages to Obama
Jory John, program director of a nonprofit writing and tutoring center, had a brilliant idea when he gave out an assignment to children he works with in an after-school program. That idea has grown into a book “Thanks and Have Fun Running the Country: A Collection of Kids’ Letters to President Obama.” Click on Tahoe Daily Tribune to read more. John also wrote an Op-Ed piece that was published in the New York Times.
