Lake Tahoe Community College announces an opportunity to work as a full-time, tenure-track Spanish faculty in the World Languages department.
The enrollments in the World Languages department have increased significantly over the last few years, mainly through distance education and the Incarcerated Students Program (ISP) sections. A full-time, tenure-track Spanish faculty position will allow for the stabilization and potential growth of the online program and for continued attention to the highest quality of online instruction. This position will also ensure and help grow face-to-face offerings, particularly in areas central to the core general education and degree pattern requirements. This is a field that addresses the heightened needs for Spanish language skills while supporting the institutional commitment to global and cultural awareness and literacy.
The nature of the position will support and expand elements of the Intensive Spanish Summer Institute (ISSI) into the regular academic terms with added opportunities for attendees pre- and post- ISSI, or in other ways that might help expand the reputation built and work done in the program for many years. This next Spanish faculty member will join two ISSI co-directors in realizing further potential and academic growth of the ISSI program.
World Languages Faculty Responsibilities:
- Teach assigned courses in Spanish. Courses may vary by modality: online, face-to-face, and correspondence (ISP). There is an assumption of face-to-face teaching, including in the summer quarter.
- Participate in full-time faculty responsibilities including faculty and departmental meetings, departmental planning, community liaison, curriculum development, and committee assignments.
- Develop, maintain, and assess student learning outcomes for appropriate courses; participate in and potentially oversee the use of assessments for ongoing improvement.
- Assist in developing departmental budget and class schedules.
- Select textbooks and work with lending library and Open Education Resources to address textbook affordability.
- Assist with the selection and coordination of adjunct faculty in the department as needed.
- Consult with appropriate college faculty and participate in college governance and decision-making as appropriate to the faculty role.
- Explore the feasibility of concurrent and dual enrolled courses in partnership with South Tahoe High School. Develop and teach such courses as appropriate.
Intensive Spanish Summer Institute Academic Leadership Responsibilities:
- Develop new levels of core courses, mini-courses, and cultural breakout sessions and update current curriculum as needed, particularly considering pre-ISSI and post-ISSI curricular opportunities for ISSI participants and others.
- Develop online resources.
- Serve as an academic lead for new curriculum.
- Explore short-term certificate opportunities for ISSI participants.
- Investigate expand website information. Work with the Director of Marketing and Communication to explore and expand additional social media and marketing opportunities.
- Explore program development opportunities and outcomes.
- Develop expanded online placement tools.
- Oversee and organize student learning outcomes assessment processes and the use of assessments for ongoing improvement.
- Assist with developing ISSI budgets and schedules.
- Assist with the selection and coordination of adjunct faculty and staff and provide training and support. (100+ employees)
- Consult with appropriate departments and positions on campus to ensure success of ISSI program.
- Assist with program evaluation and effectiveness.
- Become knowledgeable in all aspects of ISSI program components and tasks.
- Provide vision and leadership for full-time equivalent student growth in the integration of the World Languages department and ISSI.
- Lead other departments/programs through expertise on intensive models of instruction.
- Explore potential study-abroad partnerships to expand ISSI and World Languages departments.
As established by the Minimum Qualifications for Faculty and Administrators in California Community Colleges, Title V Regulations, the candidate must demonstrate that they satisfy the following:
Spanish (Foreign Languages)
- Master's in Spanish (the language being taught); OR
- Bachelor's in Spanish (the language being taught) AND Master's in another language or linguistics;
- OR the equivalent.
NOTE: Applicants who claim equivalent qualifications shall provide conclusive evidence that they possess qualifications that are at least equivalent to those required by the minimum qualifications of the area for which they are applying. It is the responsibility of the applicant to supply all evidence and documentation for the claim of equivalency at the time of application.
- Demonstrated ability to teach Spanish courses at the community college level.
- Demonstrated ability to perform all of the responsibilities listed above.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
- Ability to utilize innovative teaching practices, including participatory and critical thinking methodologies.
- Familiarity with characteristics of community college students.
- Understanding of small college environment.
- Interest in and ability to incorporate technology in the teaching/learning process.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to teach in another discipline.
- Strong social and emotional interpersonal skills.

After reviewing applications, those applicants judged most suitable for the position will be invited to initial interviews. These applicants will be notified by phone on or about Tuesday, March 5, 2019. Initial interviews are tentatively scheduled for March 21 and 22, 2019. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee an interview.
The Superintendent/President and the selected candidate will mutually agree on the terms of employment and the start date. The preferred start date is July 1, 2019.
Employment with Lake Tahoe Community College is not official until the selected candidate meets all pre-employment requirements. All new employees are required to submit official transcripts, proof of freedom from tuberculosis, proof of eligibility to work in the United States, and fingerprints for California Department of Justice clearance.

LTCC was originally granted accreditation in January 1979. Accreditation status has successfully been maintained ever since through a regular process of self-evaluation and review by the ACCJC. The University of California, the California State Universities, and other accredited colleges and universities give full credit for equivalent and transferable courses satisfactorily completed at Lake Tahoe Community College.The progress and stability of Lake Tahoe Community College are rooted in an institutional commitment to student success and constant efforts to realize opportunities related to the region’s unique geography and history. LTCC currently offers 35 associate degrees, including 14 associate in arts and science transfer degrees that provide seamless matriculation to four-year institutions. Additionally, the college currently offers 32 certificates. Students planning to transfer to a four-year university have a wide variety of options, as LTCC offers the equivalent of the first two years of a four-year university program. In addition to the quality programs for traditional students, LTCC has expanded its career and technical education offerings and innovative summer programs. The Intensive Spanish Summer Institute (ISSI) draws approximately 500 students from across the United States for a one-week immersion experience in Spanish language and culture. LTCC’s regionally accredited Fire Academy prepares students for Firefighter I certification in California.
