Martin Luther King, Jr. Great Winter Clothing Give-Away
Martin Luther King, Jr. Great Winter Clothing Give-Away was created in 2001 to honor the ideals of Martin Luther King, Jr., to encourage volunteerism, and to teach our students about the issues in their community. Many local children experience economic discrimination, as their families do not have money to provide winter clothing for them. As a result, these children are isolated, and cannot participate in many winter school activities.
Through donations from the community and service groups, the Foundation is able to purchase the clothing from manufacturers at greatly reduced prices. Students from Lake Tahoe Community College volunteer fit new, warm winter clothing to local children in grades K-8. School nurses, teachers and the Family Court System recommend children to receive the clothing.
The program grows each year. An estimated 400 children will need winter clothing this year. Being involved in the Giveaway is an extremely moving and humbling experience for all involved. Click here to view photos from the children who received clothing through the MLK Clothing Give-Away.
If you would like to volunteer to help distribute the clothing to local children in November, please contact Shelley Hansen: hansens@ltcc.edu or call (530) 541-4660 extension 344. Your donation of time is greatly appreciated!
